A Science lesson with our Handbook of Nature Study book coming in handy.

My husband came home from work today with a milkweed pod and a cattail (bulrush). After the youngest two boys were in bed he brought out "The Handbook of Nature Study" book that I bought this summer. It was put to good use this evening when the boys got a 30 min. Science lesson. It was pretty cool! I had been looking for something to do with them. This was perfect! The photos kind of speak for themselves. They squeezed open the pod and a white "milk" came out. My husband put some on the boys hand and once it had dried it felt rubbery. Inside the pod was a "cone" with layers of seeds. Under the seeds was a silky film that kind of reminded me of dandelions that would float away and seed everywhere. It was really neat! I just learned a lot too!
