Motherhood and how things can get pretty "buzzy"!

So, I was busy emailing and talking on the phone with my sister E. about her wedding and hotels for relatives to stay in when I hear a call from my 6 year old from outside. I head out there and try to follow his call but I don't see him. His 4 year old brother starts calling and their voices sound like they're above me. I look up and they've both climbed 2/3s of the way up one of our 15-20 ft tall Spruce trees!!! I try to calmly tell them that the branches of Spruce trees are not made for boys and that they can easily break. So they work their way down. I head back inside when I have them back on the ground and just after I've headed back inside my 2 year old comes in screaming and yelling out "Bumble bee", "Bumble Bee" as he gets closer to me I hear a buzzing coming from the sleeve of his shirt that he is trying to get off. I realise that a bee, or wasp or bumble bee must be trapped in his shirt. I carefully "quickly" take his shirt off and grab some shoes and hit his shirt till the buzzing stops. I take T. into the kitchen and put some afterbite on his arm. A minute later another bump or sting spot appears. He had been stung not once but twice! What a brave little guy he was! Once he was feeling better I went and checked what had bit him. It turned out it was a bumble bee. I was actuallystung in the ear by one a couple of years ago. I had to rip its body off my ear before it stopped buzzing and to kill it because it was a stuck in the cartilage. My ear got quite swollen and was still ringing from the loud buzzing and so sore before I put afterbite on it.
I was so surprised because I was always told and had read in several books about bees that bumble bees were harmless.
Never tell anyone or let anyone tell you that bumble bees are harmless, if you make them mad or scare them, THEY WILL STING AND IT REALLY, REALLY HURTS!

  1. nope, I worked with a guy who studied bees at the U of Guelph. He told me that of all the bees, the large bumble-bees have the one of the worst stings. However it is quite hard to get them to sting. That is because they are non-aggressive and they can only sting once after which they die. The stinger actually gets ripped out of their body. Wasps and regular honey bees can sting multiple times but the sting will not be as severe. At least that is what he told me.
